About Paris

what's Paris like for fitness fans

Paris is a city that’s full of history and culture. Situated on the river Seine in north-central France, it’s one of the largest and most populous cities in the European Union. The French capital is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, drawing an estimated 32 million visitors each year.

As with any popular destination, there are plenty of things to do in Paris. You can explore its famous landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. Or check out some of its museums, like the Musée d’Orsay or the Louvre. And don’t forget to enjoy some of the city’s delicious food and wine.

While Paris is a great city to visit any time of year, there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re planning to go there. For one, it can be expensive – especially if you’re looking to eat out at restaurants every night. And secondly, it can be hot in the summertime, with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).

Is Paris a good place for fitness lovers to visit?

Paris is a great city for fitness enthusiasts, with a number of big fitness events taking place throughout the year. If you’re looking to exercise outside of your hotel gym, there are a number of great places to do so in the city. And, if you’re looking for some healthy food options that are easy to find, Paris has you covered there as well.

How We Picked The Best Hotel Gyms in Paris

The 'science' behind our Paris gym hotel reviews

As with our other best hotel gyms in the world reviews, we always look first for the ability to hit the foundational lifts. These are the only compound exercises that really matter – then, if they can’t be done with barbells, we aim to see if the hotel gym in Paris lets you get in a total body workout. Can you hit all your major muscle groups?  This matters as it forms the cornerstone of a hiit, crossfit, muscle growth or ft burning resistance session. In some cases we have singled out a hotel or two for being great for cardio – and while doing cardio indoors is not our preferred choice, everyone is different and we can respect a sea of nice shiny new Technogym cardio equipment.

We are our audience. That’s the first thing you should know. We have made that walk into hotel gyms for over a decade now and know the disappointment that happens all too often, leaving you annoyed you paid extra for a place to stay that had a fitness centre.

The reality is most hotel gyms have been put together by someone who has never been to a gym in their life. We weigh up several facts when it comes to picking winners or calling out losers.

1. Can you complete the major compound lifts? These include squats, deadlifts, presses and rows (or pulls). These are generally best served with a squat rack, maybe a smith machine and the presence of an Olympic barbell. Read about the “Fundamental Lifts“.

2. Who does the weight load cater for? The reality is most hotel gyms do not have sufficient weight plates or dumbbells for strong women, let alone adult males who visit the gym regularly.

3. Overall gym conditions. This includes space to stretch, the condition of equipment, is there a/c etc. Nothing worse than trying to do an ab workout or flexibility movements on a wooden floor with no mats.

4. Cardio Range. What is the condition of the CV equipment and is there too much focus on machines that replicate the one exercise we can all do without a gym. Running/Walking. Yes – we will down mark for a room of treadmills….so stupid.

5. La Clef Tour Eiffel Paris by The Crest Collection // Best Hotel Gym Runner-Up

Lovely hotel enhanced further by the dumbbells running to 30kg and an Olympic bar resting on a power rack. It just needs some heavier plates. But I can work with this.

6. Villa M // Best Hotel Gym In Paris With Punchbags

 4.4/5
Nice place to stay if you want to pretend you're a local. Give the weights a break for a week and leave your calories in the ring instead. Great way to come home a pound or two lighter.

Just outside of the main tourist drags you have the neighbourhood accommodation of Villa M. Frequented by digital nomads or young professionals in the city on business, the hotel VIlla M has a gym which is more focussed on pugilism than powerlifting. As an ex-boxer myself, I still go back to boxing conditioning in my leaning up months of a year, so if you want a change to your exercise habits and a great way to burn off the Red wine, cheese and baguettes, then Villa M is a good shout.

We have awarded Villa M as our best hotel gym in Paris for boxing fans, but if you like your cardio to include  a punch bag or 10, this is the place.
